Artist Statement: I refer to myself as a “paper artist” because I love working and exploring art that involves paper. I work primarily in collage mixed media art but recently began exploring a new technique called Joomchi. Joomchi papers, an ancient Korean art of felting Hanji paper together, can stand on its own or be incorporated into my collage work. Like collage, it requires planning and process. A challenge for me is to try to figure out how to make paper pieces work and establishing relationships between materials. These relationships create the mood of my pieces. Though my art is considered abstract, viewers will recognize my subject matter. As an avid gardener, I am drawn to still lives and often use eco-dyed papers from botanicals from my garden to add to my work. My goal with each piece is to have the viewer drawn into the piece to explore the emotion, composition, materials, and textures of my pieces. I love creating texture.
I also do sculptural work using Papier Mache’. I’ve created whimsical sculptures in this medium including dragons, monsters, ballerinas, mystical creatures, mushrooms and animals. I love watching viewers react to these pieces and how much enjoyment each piece evokes in all ages. Plus it is a nice break from collage while still creating in paper.
